President Obama Addresses the United Nations | The White House
President Obama Addresses the United Nations | The White House ~Speaking to the United Nations General Assembly, President Obama remembered Ambassador Chris Stevens and delivered a defense of both free speech and the spirit of tolerance.
The President described Stevens -- who was slain earlier this month in an attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya -- as a man who "embodied the best of America."
"Like his fellow Foreign Service officers, he built bridges across oceans and cultures, and was deeply invested in the international cooperation that the United Nations represents," the President said. "He acted with humility, but he also stood up for a set of principles -- a belief that individuals should be free to determine their own destiny, and live with liberty, dignity, justice, and opportunity."
And in discussing the recent attacks on American embassies, President Obama called for a renewed commitment to the idea the United Nations represents -- what he described as, "the notion that people can resolve their differences peacefully; that diplomacy can take the place of war; that in an interdependent world, all of us have a stake in working towards greater opportunity and security for our citizens."
The President called on the body to reaffirm that our collective futures would be determined by those like Ambassador Stevens, and not, he said, by the forces of violence and intolerance.
President Obama described the video that has sparked protests and outrage throughout the Muslim world as "crude and disgusting." But he answered those who have asked why America doesn't ban what we find offensive.
The answer, he said, was our Constitutional protection of free speech.
"As President of our country and Commander-in-Chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day," he told the General Assembly, "And I will always defend their right to do so."

OpEdNews - Article: Veteran Op-Ed writer denied prison visit for identifying herself as a journalist
OpEdNews - Article: Veteran Op-Ed writer denied prison visit for identifying herself as a journalist ~ I am writing this report for every family and friend of a prisoner who has been turned away from visiting a loved one at a California State Prison based on invented rules and arbitrary dress codes. The people have a right to know what is taking place in the prisons, which are taxpayer-financed institutions wasting billions of our education and human services dollars.
When I became a California journalist in the 1960"s, I never dreamed that I would be using my advanced education to write about how I support my breasts, especially in what should be my Golden Years. But the reason I was turned away was not really about my bra choice, it was because I identified myself as a journalist and promised to expose their abuses in my columns well after they made the decision not to let me re-enter once I complied.
Huge Waterspout in Croatia Caught on Cam ~ Ғасєвффк Әят
Huge Waterspout in Croatia Caught on Cam ~ Ғасєвффк Әят ~~ Here’s a video of a huge tornado “waterspout” over the sea of Ardiac in Croatia. The amazing footage was recorded by Mladen Duka on August 4, 2006 when he goes out for a morning walk in small Croatian villages of Bol and Murvica in Brach Island.

Mladen described the encounter: “It was fascinating! She was there in front of me and my friend, connecting the sea and the cloud. All around us was calm, windless and we just heard the loud crickets sizzle and waterspout fizzle sound! She was coming closer and closer in full strength and beauty, swinging in the waist. We stood there, taking pictures, and finally when lightning start to stroke all around, we start to run to shelter in a small chapel at the nearby graveyard. Suddenly umbilical connection between sea and sky split up and she disappeared! At the same moment, the heavy rain started, so swelter and humid that we can hardly breathe climbing up to the village.

The Obama administration and the cover-up of CIA torture
The Obama administration and the cover-up of CIA torture ~~Coming barely one week after Obama’s attorney general, Eric Holder, announced the Justice Department’s shutting down of all investigations into CIA torture and other crimes committed in the “global war on terrorism,” the report makes clear that the use of torture was far more extensive than previously acknowledged and underscores the continuing criminality of US foreign policy and both major political parties.
The 156-page report produced by Human Rights Watch (HW) is based upon interviews with 14 Libyans subjected to “extraordinary rendition” and torture by the CIA and then forcibly returned to Libya, where they were imprisoned and in some cases tortured again by the government of Col. Muammar Gaddafi. Substantiating their testimony are classified documents—

Hospital: Mom booted from ER who died in jail was treated appropriately
Hospital: Mom booted from ER who died in jail was treated appropriately~A New Year's Eve tornado in 2010 destroyed Brown's home in north St. Louis home, the Post-Dispatch reported. She and her two children moved to Berkeley, a St. Louis suburb, and she lost her job at a sandwich shop soon afterward, the Post-Dispatch said.
According to the Post-Dispatch, her utilities were shut off because she stopped paying her bills, and after a child welfare agent who visited the home in April found a feces-filled toilet, burn marks on the floor where she had lit fires to keep warm and other distressing signs, Brown was arrested for parental neglect. Police reported at the time that she seemed confused, the newspaper reported.
Her mother, Dorothy Davis, received custody of Brown's children on the condition that Brown couldn't also live with them, and Brown's home was condemned, the newspaper reported. She lived in four homeless shelters from May until September, according to the Post-Dispatch.

OpEdNews - Article: Searching for Buzzwords to Describe Republicans; Revisiting 2004--
OpEdNews - Article: Searching for Buzzwords to Describe Republicans; Revisiting 2004--Tax and Spend is a term the right wing uses to disparage "liberals" who put money into social programs, and who attempt to equalize the tax and income playing fields. The truth here has been made crystal clear-- the far right-- they used to call them royalty, the moneyed class, the aristocracy, and now we call this greedy group of fat-cats the top 5% or 1% of the income bracket-- wants to live off the rest of the people. They want to get disgustingly high salaries and they don't want to pay any taxes. They want to be unrestrained in their efforts to make money, regardless of what it costs environmentally, socially, diplomatically, even in terms of lives lost to war, pollution, accidents caused by poor product design or low, un-regulated industry standards.
